Athletic Training Defined

At its core, athletic training is the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic injuries.

For ATCs to be successful, we must use our skills to make sure injuries are evaluated correctly and treated in the most efficient way possible so that our patients return from their injuries better than before.

To do this effectively, we must first be able to make quality clinical decisions based on the history of the patient’s injury, our objective view of the injury, then by palpating the injured area, and finally by using a particular test that we have learned to give us a more specific idea of what is happening within the injury. All of these go into the process of evaluating an orthopedic injury properly. To properly treat those injuries, ATCs use another part of their skills. This still involves making sound clinical decisions using evidence-based practice. Treatment skills include creating rehabilitation plans that strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles, using therapeutic modalities to aid in the healing process of injuries and use manual therapy to mobilize soft tissue to allow it to move fluidly.

Certified athletic trainers have an extensive skill set, often referred to as a “jack of all trades.”

This puts us in a unique situation that allows us to use every tool in our toolbox to help our patients stay healthy. At Recovery Day, the goal is to bring all of these tools to our clients who may not have access to this type of healthcare. Not everything requires a doctor’s visit and not everything is cause for fear, some “fixes” are as simple as giving the body some love and attention that it so desperately needs.
