Wellness Wednesday: Inflamation

What is inflammation:

Inflammation is a part of the body’s healing process. It aids in fighting off infections, musculoskeletal injuries, and different toxins, all to heal itself. However, the process of inflammation can often backfire if the body does not send all of the correct signals to push the inflammation away from the area once things are better.

Musculoskeletal inflammation can occur in a multitude of scenarios varying from chronic to acute. Chronic inflammation can be seen in those who do repetitive activities such as running, manual labor-intensive careers, gymnastics, baseball, and others. These chronic inflammation injuries have many common names like; runner’s knee, tennis elbow, snapping hip syndrome, and countless others. Acute inflammation can occur with ankle sprains, torn ligaments, broken bones, and strained muscles.

Some ways to see inflammation:

  • The area may be tender to the touch
  • The site may be warm to the touch
  • Swelling may occur
  • Feeling of pain following an activity

How to treat inflammation:

To properly treat inflammation, you must figure why it is happening. If it is chronic, you may need to modify or stop the activity causing the inflammation to occur, along with strengthening exercises and stretching to help the muscle around the area. You may also want to ice or heat the area after the activity. If it is acute and the area has swelled, the main objective will be first to decrease the swelling, which can be done through exercises, compression, and other treatments.
