Wellness Wednesday – Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a widespread injury that occurs in more than 3 million cases annually. It is an inflammatory injury that affects the thick ligamentous band on the bottom of the foot. The causes of plantar fasciitis can vary; overuse, improper footwear, and pes planus (flat feet.)

Signs of plantar fasciitis may include stabbing pain near the heel, sharp pain in the sole, but the most telling sign is a pain in the morning, especially the first step out of bed. Plantar fasciitis can be a long and tedious injury, usually taking 6-12 months to heal fully because of its lack of blood flow. However, with therapy, the damage can take less time to heal and decrease the pain, increasing the person’s ability to function. Treatments to aid in healing are; therapeutic exercise plans to strengthen the foot’s intrinsic muscles, using manual therapy techniques to increase the blood flow to the area and loosen the fascia. Another way of treating this inflammatory injury is by possibly changing shoes/ adding inserts to take the pressure off the fascia and give the arch the support it needs.

Recovery Day uses a variety of tools and manual therapy techniques to aid the healing process, including IAMT which allows an increase in blood flow and a decrease in inflammation.
