Wellness Wednesday: Shin Splints

“Shin splints” – you know about it, you’ve probably had them, and you likely do absolutely nothing about them until they are absolutely excruciating.

Shin splits are a common exercise issue, often referring to pain that is felt on the inside of the tibia (shinbone). This area becomes inflamed in all components of the lower leg, muscles, tendons, and bone tissue and all that the person experiencing the pain feels is pain. Overuse and general tightness in the calves and feet are the culprit and no matter how many times you tell a person this, they roll their eyes and say that can’t possibly be the answer.

Well folks, if you don’t want to roll yourself, Recovery Day has the people here for you! Athletic trainers see this injury more than almost any other and both ATCs at Recovery Day are more than confident in how to alleviate this issue. Myofascial release of the calf in specific areas, IAMT around the shin bone where the inflammation occurs, and a calming stim and ice to finish the session are the perfect fix. (Don’t forget, 30-minute sessions are just $40!). Realistically, this should happen at least once every other week if you don’t want to do this yourself but for those willing to commit to stretching appropriately,

Recovery Day is the perfect starting point to get you back on your feet!
