Wellness Wednesday – Stretching

Stretching is one of the most overlooked parts of exercising.

Most people often find some reason not to stretch: not having enough time, not knowing what stretches to do, or even feeling like it does not help. Stretching can be one of the simplest forms of preventative medicine. A lot of common chronic musculoskeletal injuries are caused by muscles being too tight. These injuries can include low back pain, muscle strains, shoulder impingement, shin splints, and many others.

What are the benefits of stretching?

  • Improves posture
  • Reduces soreness from exercise
  • Increases blood flow
  • Increases range of motion
  • Aids in stress management

2 Types of stretching and when to perform them:

Dynamic stretching is done by moving through the full range of motion. This constant movement raises your body temperature and allows your muscles to be more reactive. It works exceptionally well when being used to help you warm up before any exercise.

Static stretching is done by holding one position for 30-45 seconds. It works well when used at the end of exercise to help your muscles cool down and lengthen. This alleviates some of the soreness that is felt the day after a hard workout.
